Additional Thoughts on Monkey See, Monkey Do

Art by Johnny Disher

I was discussing my previous Monkey See, Monkey Do blog with one of my friends, and mentioned my frustration about not really understanding why dysfunctional families repeat. She had such a great answer I wanted to share it. From a spiritual perspective, dysfunctional behavior repeats until someone breaks the cycle.

I hope I broke the cycle for my family, but ask me in 20 years, and we can chat about what my children hold against me. : )

I do believe spiritually we are given lessons to learn. I also believe those lessons repeat until we learn what's needed. I learn everything the hard way, so unfortunately I've noticed I've been served up lessons multiple times until DUH, I get it. It hasn't been fun, but once I get it, I don't repeat my dumb behavior.

I've noticed the lessons because I'm living a conscious life. As I've mentioned in an earlier blog, “To know thyself is the beginning of wisdom,” by Socrates.

I don't have all the answers. I can only share what I've learned, how I've coped and hope it helps someone else who's looking for answers. I like the scripture below. I believe if you're looking for answers, you'll find them. From the King James Bible translation of Matthew 7:7: "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you."
